The Railway Museum

"Railway termini are our gates to the glorious and the unknown. Through them we pass out into adventure and sunshine, to them, alas! we return."

There are many museums to visit in Matjiesfontein; and a walk along the train station platform is essential to feel the essence of what this tiny Karoo town was created around.

Matjiesfontein was founded in 1884 by the legendary and energetic Scottish railway man, James Douglas Logan and from a small railway halt in the middle of nowhere it became an outpost of the British Empire.

On a visit to the platform you'll find a station master's office dating back to the late 1800s as well as the original signal room.
