The Old Post Office
"How hard it is to make your thoughts look anything but imbecile fools when you paint them with ink on paper." - Olive Schreiner
It was from this very office that Olive Schreiner posted her numerous letters. Now The Matjiesfontein Gift Shop, you'll find it on the main street, right next door to the famous author's cottage.
Renowned war correspondent—and subsequent thriller writer—Edgar Wallace, also sent his Anglo-Boer War dispatches from here.
It is said that in this very room in 1901, Wallace stood over the telegraph operator transcribing the first report to the Commonwealth of Queen Victoria’s death.
These days visitors can browse a selection of original and unique gifts, which includes a selection of Africana books, collectibles and bygones. The focus is on supporting small businesses and communities of the Karoo and Cape regions.
