Bengy is the youngest brother of David, the latter day Laird of Matjiesfontein whose vision of preserving the iconic Lord Milner Hotel and other historic buildings at Matjiesfontein began in the late 1960s. To his testament, the whole Village originally founded by Scottish railwayman James Logan in the early 1880s, achieved National Heritage status securing it’s preservation for generations to come.

Bengy did not follow his two older brothers, David and Graham, into hospitality, but instead became a focused academic, heading the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at UCTs Medical School, alongside
leading cutting edge research in the field of human development (embryology).

That said, Ben remains pivotally involved in Matjiesfontein. He has a passion for history and antiques, and as such the continued preservation and historical integrity of the village. His input is vital, bringing experience and wisdom to help guide projects and activities, helping us deliver a vision we have to provide a unique and authentic experience for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. A vision of encouraging learning, letting history excite visitors, and securing the timeless traditions of Matjiesfontein for future generations to enjoy.

Tom Rawdon - Feb 2026

A Step Toward a Greener Future

We’re thrilled to announce that Matjiesfontein has gone solar, taking a major step toward becoming fully off-grid and environmentally sustainable. Our newly installed solar energy system now powers much of the village, reducing our reliance on traditional energy sources and ensuring a more sustainable way forward for generations to come.

The Karoo is famous for its wide-open skies and endless sunshine — and we’re putting that natural resource to good use. The new solar system captures and stores solar energy throughout the day, providing clean, renewable power to our facilities. This move not only reduces our carbon footprint but also helps preserve the pristine environment that makes Matjiesfontein so special.

For more than a century, Matjiesfontein has stood as a living time capsule of Victorian charm and South African history. Going off-grid allows us to protect that legacy responsibly. By minimizing our environmental impact, we’re ensuring that the unique character, landscapes, and biodiversity of the area remain untouched and vibrant.

This solar transformation is part of our broader commitment to sustainability. From water-saving initiatives to waste reduction and now renewable energy, Matjiesfontein is proud to set an example of how heritage and environmental stewardship can coexist beautifully.

We believe that true preservation isn’t only about maintaining old buildings — it’s about safeguarding the world around them too.

Visitors to Matjiesfontein can now enjoy the same timeless atmosphere — with the added knowledge that their stay supports a cleaner, greener future. Whether you’re wandering the historic streets, enjoying a meal at the Lord Milner Hotel, or watching the sunset over the Karoo plains, the power of the sun is quietly working behind the scenes to make it all possible.

Matjiesfontein has always stood the test of time — and with solar energy lighting the way, we’re ensuring it continues to do so sustainably.

Under the Karoo Stars: A Journey with the Shepherds Behind Our Lamb

At The Lord Milner Hotel in Matjiesfontein, we believe that great food tells a story — not just of flavour, but of heritage, tradition, and the people behind the plate. Recently, our senior management team laced up their boots and set off on an unforgettable journey to connect with the source of one of our menu’s star ingredients: the famously succulent Karoo lamb.

What began as a curiosity soon turned into a deep appreciation. We joined a local sheep farming family on a 7-day, 125 km transhumance trek — the traditional, time-honoured journey that farmers in the Karoo still make twice a year, moving their flocks between the winter and summer grazing lands. Starting in the Merweville area of the Great Karoo and finishing in the rugged Roggeveld near Matjiesfontein, the journey brought us face-to-face with the soul of the Karoo.

These treks, which can stretch up to 160 km and take as long as 15 days, are not just about moving livestock. They’re a way of life. The farmers — often with children, grandparents, and faithful sheepdogs in tow — walk every step of the way. They sleep under the open skies, brave the elements, and care for their flock day and night. It’s a ritual that has endured for generations, rooted in a deep respect for the land, the animals, and the rhythm of nature.

Walking alongside them, we witnessed the bond between shepherd and sheep, the resilience it takes to thrive in the Karoo, and the sheer determination behind every forkful of lamb we proudly serve. There were no fancy camps, no shortcuts — just dust, stars, cracked heels, campfire coffee, and stories passed down across time.

This experience wasn’t just about learning — it was about honouring. The Karoo lamb on our menu is more than just a dish; it's a tribute to this incredible tradition and the hardworking families who keep it alive. It's the taste of the veld, the scent of the dust, the echo of a shepherd’s call across the hills.

So next time you savour our Karoo lamb at The Lord Milner Hotel, know that it’s seasoned not only with salt and rosemary but with respect, connection, and the spirit of the Karoo.

Come taste the journey.

Olive Schreiner

Olive Schreiner: A Pioneering Voice in South African Literature and Feminism, with Roots in Matjiesfontein

Olive Schreiner (1855–1920) is celebrated as one of South Africa’s most influential literary figures and a pioneering feminist. Her works, activism, and connection to places like Matjiesfontein—a small village in the heart of the Karoo—left a profound impact on South African literature, politics, and social reform.

Early Life and Influences
Schreiner was born in the Eastern Cape to missionary parents and grew up in a large family with little formal education. Yet, her experiences living in South Africa's rural landscapes shaped her worldview, giving her insight into colonial life and its challenges, particularly for women and indigenous populations. This early exposure to inequality would go on to deeply influence her writing and activism.

Schreiner’s move to England in her early twenties allowed her to pursue writing seriously. While working as a governess, she penned The Story of an African Farm (1883), published under the pseudonym Ralph Iron. This novel became a landmark in South African and feminist literature.

The Story of an African Farm: A Revolutionary Novel
Set on a remote South African farm, The Story of an African Farm grappled with existential and societal questions—gender roles, personal freedom, spirituality, and social justice. It challenged the Victorian-era norms of its time, particularly with its portrayal of strong, independent female characters like Lyndall, who rejected the expectations placed on women in society.

This novel, considered groundbreaking in both its themes and style, made Schreiner one of the first South African writers to gain international recognition.

Schreiner and Matjiesfontein
In the early 1890s, Olive Schreiner moved to the small Victorian-era village of Matjiesfontein, a remote settlement in the Karoo established by James Douglas Logan. Known for its bracing air and as a haven for intellectuals and political figures, Matjiesfontein became an important place of refuge and inspiration for Schreiner.

During her time in Matjiesfontein, Schreiner continued her writing and political activism, drawing from the quiet isolation of the Karoo landscape. Matjiesfontein, with its unique mix of colonial charm and stark wilderness, provided the perfect setting for her contemplative nature. Here, Schreiner worked on several manuscripts and engaged with key political figures of the day, including Cecil John Rhodes, whom she critiqued for his imperialist policies.

Schreiner's residence in Matjiesfontein also added to the village’s growing reputation as a cultural and intellectual hub. Her presence in the town further linked the quiet Karoo village to larger conversations around feminism, colonialism, and the fight for justice in South Africa.

Feminist and Anti-Imperialist Activism
Schreiner’s feminism was not confined to her literature. She was an outspoken advocate for women's rights and racial equality. In her influential book Woman and Labour (1911), she argued for women’s economic independence and the right to work, which became a key text for the suffrage movement.

Her activism also extended to critiquing British imperialism and advocating for indigenous South Africans' rights, drawing connections between the oppression of women and colonial subjects. Schreiner’s time in Matjiesfontein, surrounded by the stark beauty of the Karoo, further solidified her commitment to social justice.

Legacy and Impact
Olive Schreiner’s contributions to literature and political thought continue to be felt today. Her writings, particularly The Story of an African Farm, laid the groundwork for feminist literature, while her political essays championed equality across gender and race. Schreiner's connection to Matjiesfontein remains a significant part of her legacy, as the village represents a period of personal reflection and activism in her life.

Visitors to Matjiesfontein today can still feel the echoes of Schreiner’s influence. The town’s historical charm, combined with its association with influential figures like Schreiner, makes it a significant stop for those interested in South African literary history. Schreiner’s home in the village, now preserved, offers a glimpse into the life of a writer who left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of the country.

Conclusion
Olive Schreiner's legacy as a pioneering feminist, anti-imperialist, and literary giant is closely tied to places like Matjiesfontein, where she found the solitude and inspiration to continue her work. Her bold critiques of society, advocacy for justice, and remarkable literary achievements have ensured that her voice continues to inspire those fighting for gender equality, racial justice, and personal freedom in South Africa and beyond.

Looking at stars keeps things in perspective for us and reminds us that there is so much more to the world!

Stargazing is an activity for anyone, young or old. Stars can be relaxing and even a meditative hobby with friends and family, or even a romantic evening outdoors with your partner; it offers the feeling of endless space! The night sky is a perfect backdrop to spend quality time together and learn about the constellations and space.

Look out for the Milky Way, seek out the galactic plane and spot some well-known constellations like Orion’s Belt, the Southern Cross and more.

Did you know that five planets can be seen with the naked eye? Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are the five brightest planets, and on very clear evenings (and time of the year) you may be lucky enough to see them.

The best spot to stargaze at Matjiesfontein is from the town’s historic cricket pitch where light is minimal, allowing the night sky to take centre stage. The best time to go is days before, during or soon after each new moon, when there is little or no moon in the sky to wash out light from fainter stars.

We are also very excited that Matjiesfontein was chosen as one of only three locations worldwide to position a LEGS facility due to the Karoo’s clear skies and lack of rainfall meaning the location is ideal to monitor outer space. Apart from its low radio frequency interference and good weather conditions, the location of Southern Hemisphere allows NASA to situate additional satellite tracking infrastructure.
Badri Younes, Deputy Associate Administrator for NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program, joined with SANSA officials on November 8th in Matjiesfontein for a ground breaking at the future site of a new Lunar Exploration Ground Sites (LEGS) antenna.

The ceremony was preceded by the signing of a Letter of Intent between NASA and the South African Department of Science and Innovation to formalise the space exploration partnership.

Located approximately 240 kilometers northeast of Cape Town, Matjiesfontein will be one of only three, 18- to 24-meter, communications LEGS antennas strategically placed around the globe to ensure near-continuous connectivity between astronauts on NASA’s Artemis spacecraft and those who will subsequently come to work on and around the lunar surface.

“Location, weather and existing infrastructure make Matjiesfontein the ideal place to build this antenna,” said Younes. ”We really couldn’t have asked for a better spot on Earth than here in South Africa, with whom we first partnered six decades ago to land the first humans on the lunar surface.”

South Africa was home to a ground tracking station outside Johannesburg at Hartebeesthoek (HBK) that played a critical role in NASA’s Apollo missions in the 1960s. Artemis, named for Apollo’s sister, will land the first woman and person of colour on the Moon, paving the way for a long-term lunar presence, and serving as a steppingstone to send astronauts to Mars.

“We see this partnership as mutually beneficial,” said Dr. Phil Mjwara, DSI Director General. “Matjiesfontein ground station will alleviate increased demand for NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN), allowing Artemis to meet its goals and expand our scientific knowledge of key challenges to astronaut health and safety, such as space radiation, altered gravity fields, isolation and confinement, closed environments, and extreme and prolonged distance from Earth.”

“We are excited but not surprised that Matjiesfontein was chosen as one of only three locations worldwide to position a LEGS facility. The Karoo offers the perfect setting due to its clear skies and lack of rainfall, making it ideal to monitor outer space”, says Werner Smit, Matjiesfontien General Manager.

Matjiesfontien will join future LEGS facilities at NASA’s White Sands Complex in Las Cruces, New Mexico and a still-to-be-determined location in Australia. With a LEGS station in North America, South Africa, and Australia, the Moon will always be in Earth’s view to ensure essential, enhanced direct-to-Earth communications capabilities up to two million kilometers away through NASA’s Near Space Network (NSN).

“We are pleased that this project has reached a significant milestone with the support of the Department of Science and Innovation as well as the partnership of NASA,” said Tiaan Strydom, SANSA acting Commercial Services Executive.

“Matjiesfontien ground station extends SANSA space capabilities and specialization, taking the agency a notch higher as a global player in space science and technology.”

Added SCaN’s Younes, “The Moon brought NASA and South Africa together 60 years ago. I’m so pleased it’s done so again today.”

Ingredients:

· 1 bottle (750ml) rosé wine (or a non-alcoholic alternative), chilled

· ¼ cup Watermelon schnapps liqueur or non-alcoholic Watermelon cordial

· 1 – ½ cups cubed seedless fresh Watermelon ( ½ inch sized cubes)

· 1 medium lime, thinly sliced

· ½ to 1 cup fresh blackberries, halved

· 1 can (12 ounces) lemon-lime soda, chilled

· Ice cubes

· Fresh basil or mint leaves

Top Tip: Best enjoyed on very hot days served extra cold (chill your glass in the freezer for a few minutes before serving).

Chef Craig’s new favourite versatile Karoo food item

From past influences, to present members who have devoted years of service to our beloved town and community, the month of August is dedicated to them.

You may have heard of The Story of an African Farm, a classic novel written by South African author Olive Schreiner that explores rural life in South Africa in the 19th century. Schreiner was one of the first voices of literature and feminism in South Africa, and still very much has a presence in Matjiesfontein today. Her home, where she lived for a number of years, is a landmark in the village and has been converted into the Olive Schreiner Cottage, situated on the historic main street of Matjiesfontein. We are proud to pay tribute to such a powerful historic woman over a century later!

Alongside our rich history, we want to thank all the women at Matjiesfontein today – some who have been with us for over 15 years – for all their hard work and dedication. Our previous head of reservations (recently promoted to duty manager) Cindy Anthonie, has devoted 17 years of service to our team; Ingrid Smith, also part of the reservations team, has been with us for an astounding 20 years; Linda, a member of our waitron team, has dedicated an impressive 30 years to the Matjiesfontein family; and Johanna Smith, our scullery assistant, has been in service for 25 years.

Meet Cindy Anthony

I originally started working at the Lord Milner Hotel in Matjiesfontein on 22 August 2004, which means I celebrated my 17th anniversary here a week ago (aptly in Women’s Month!).

I fell in love with the town the first time I visited with my family in 2004. There was a temporary position available at the time at the station museum, to oversee it and receive entrance fees from visitors. I applied and was given the post. Soon after, a position for a relief receptionist became available; my application was successful. My post eventually became permanent and here I am 17 years later, still loving what I do!

I am in love with the town and its history over the years, but also the management team, the Rawdons and the people of the place; we are one big family. I thoroughly enjoy working with guests and our team - people are my passion.

I was eventually appointed as Head of Reception and most recently promoted to Duty Manager, which I love as it still gives me the opportunity to work with guests. I look forward to many more year at Matjiesfontein!

We appreciate each and every woman at Matjiesfontein for their contribution to our town and community. We cherish and appreciate you, and are so grateful for the positive impact you make every day; and to all women of South Africa, a big thank you!

"Where there is a women, there is magic" - Ntozake Shange

MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MEAL-MAKING MAGIC

Trained at Cape University of Technology in Granger Bay, Cape Town, Chef Craig has been with Matjies for around 2 and a half years now. Prior to this, he spent 12 years at The Portswood Hotel in the V&A Waterfront and 3 years at Karoo1 Hotel.

Some of Chef Craig’s favourite dishes include comfort food – he loves the simplicity. A man of juxtapositions, his personal favourite however is Indian cuisine as he enjoys the complex and robust flavours. He is inspired by other chefs in the industry that he can relate to and infuses their ideas into creating his own mouthwatering meals.

5 ingredients he cannot be without to ensure his dishes are packed with flavour include fresh coriander, chilli, olive oil, garlic and cassia (for those who don’t know, this is botanically known as Cinnamomum aromaticum or Cinnamomum cassia - also known as Chinese cinnamon. Cinnamon is warmer in tone and tan in color with a sweet flavor; when ground, it is hard to distinguish between the two. But the difference is in the colour and smell of each of the spices. Cassia is more of a reddish brown in color and has a coarser texture, with a stronger, yet more bitter flavour.)

When visiting South Africa, Chef Craig thinks everyone should indulge in a braai, although this doesn’t have to be just braai broodjies and boerewors. He suggests trying lamb chops and boerewors and turning it into a curry, which he has added to previous menus and received many compliments!

When visiting the Karoo, keeping it simple is the way to go. He loves creating tasty lamb loin chops seasoned with salt and pepper which is always a winner! Chef Craig believes Karoo cuisine is special and that the style in which the dishes are prepared and served ensure people understand the background and flavours that go into these simple yet delectable dishes.

Matjiesfontein offers a truly memorable dining experience, not only because of the heritage it holds but also due to the mouth-watering lamb shank on the dinner menu (combined with the warm smiles of the waitering staff)!

Breakfasts for Chef Craig always include variety with loads of fresh and tasty ingredients.

When next at Matjies be sure to come say hello to Chef Craig! 👋👨🏽‍🍳

ALL FIRED UP – BREAD BAKING THE OLD SCHOOL WAY

Bread has always been a food staple for mankind, with bread baking having evolved along with the rise of technology over the years.

The first practical coal oven is said to have been invented by Jordan Mott in 1833. This oven had ventilation to burn the coal efficiently, was cylindrical in shape and made of heavy cast iron, with a hole on the top which was then enclosed by an iron ring.

Bread-making was eventually industrialised at the start of the 20th century (Wikipedia, no date) and, safe to say, is now found in some shape or form in most households around the world.

Did you know? Our little village has our very own age-old coal oven, which was originally operated in the busy kitchen of the Matjiesfontein Station in the early 1900s, servicing a number or trains stopping at the station for supplies. By the 1990s it was hardly ever used until it became a museum piece of sorts.

Keeping with the history of our charming old-world town, we decided to fire up the old beauty once again. It was restored, refurbished and refitted in the coffee shop to bring you freshly baked bread, just as the residents and visitors of yesteryear would have enjoyed.

Image: Head Baker, Zelna

Our mini old-school bakery comes to life at 6 am every alternate morning, when the coals are lit, while baking begins at 7 am by our talented Head Baker, Zelna.

We offer a variety of baked breads to satisfy your taste buds, from white to brown, seeded loaf to sourdough. Overnight guests at the Lord Milner Hotel can enjoy our scrumptious loaves at the breakfast buffet, ensuring a good ol’ Karoo start to your day! Bread can also be purchased from The Coffee House (open to day visitors and hotel guests alike) where it is used for a variety of sandwiches and bread baskets.

To us, this old-school form of bread baking is an art, and somehow, we think the loaves come out fluffier and tastier than before... come try for yourselves!

Have we tantalised your tastebuds yet? Visit Matjiesfontein and get a taste of the past with our delicious fresh breads.

With love from,
The Matjiesfontein Team

2. Enjoy a stroll through our extensive gardens

The sprawling green gardens on the property provide you with the peaceful sounds of nature as you indulge in some one-on-one time. Take some time to relax under the shade of a tree, or make use of the swing near the swimming pool for a relaxed afternoon. Make sure to take a wander into the cactus gardens for some Instagram-worthy shots (or dare we say proposal?)!

3. Take a dip

February is, after all, the hottest month of the year! Take a dip in the ‘coldest pool in South Africa’ (are you brave enough?) or enjoy the privacy of our Swimming Pool Suite – a romantic and private spot to cool off on these hot summer days.

4. Bubbles and bathtubs

What better way to celebrate your love than with bubbles – pun intended! Enjoy some sparkling wine whilst relishing in the relaxation of a bubble bath. In one of our Luxury Rooms you can experience the best of both worlds! Why share when you can have your own and still enjoy the company of your partner with a twin tub!? Please enquire with our reservations team for more info.

5. Touring and serenading

There is nothing quite like taking a walking tour with your partner. Stroll the grounds and learn all about the history of Matjiesfontein by visiting our museums or using Voice Maps. Be sure to make it back in time for a short tour Red Bus Tour with Johnny, our resident Tour Guide and piano player. He will be proving all the laughs! End off at the Laird’s Arms pub for some sing-along and serenading, and perhaps we can entice you to a little sokkie too....

Order a Matjiesfontein Lager or one of our delicious sundowners as the day draws to a close.

The Matjiesfontein Team

SOMETHING OLD AND SOMETHING NEW

It is one of those Karoo villages that owes its character and essence to a single person who had the vision and passion to create something from nothing. James Douglas Logan was one of these singular characters that played an enormous role in the establishment of our quirky and unique town. Now, the entire village of Matjiesfontein is preserved as a National Heritage Site since 1975 under the direction of revered hotelier David Rawdon, and today his family who took over the reins after his passing in 2010. It truly takes you on a step back in time.

Other than the famous buildings such as the Lord Milner Hotel, Pink Church, Museums (to name but a few), do you remember Tweedside House? If you’ve been on the red bus tour of the town, we are sure you’ve come across one or two of Johnny’s jokes when passing this house on tour.

It was built in 1884 and it belonged to James Logan – it was also the first house in South Africa to have a combination of electricity, a flushing toilet AND a landline telephone linked to his neighbouring farm, also called Tweedside!! As Johnny would say – “he called the guy with the second telephone!”. Quite impressive for this little Karoo town if you ask us.

A Scottish connection made with both the house and farm named after the River Tweed in Scotland.

Photo: View of the garden and quiver trees from Tweedside House

James Logan died in 1920 and is buried in a little cemetery 10 kilometres from Matjiesfontein. His grave is located next to that of George Lohmann, a famous English cricketer who spent the last years of his life in the superb climatic environment of the Karoo.

Tweedside House was then closed in the mid-1990's after Major Buist died there and has been used as a storeroom until now….

We are excited to show you a little sneak peek of the recent makeover and restoration to Tweedside – creating something new from something old. Keeping the integrity of the building, it has been restored to its original intended use – a humble abode, thus adding an exciting new accommodation option to the town.

Photo: restoring the original doors, floors, lighting, fireplaces & windows

With eight bedrooms and ample living space, it lends itself to Matjies’ very own manor house style offering! A perfect space for group or wedding accommodation bookings.

Photo: some of the original furniture has been restored and reused

Just to whet the appetite, launch is planned for later in 2022. We are excited to have you stay with us at Tweedside in future! Keep an eye on our socials and newsletter for the news of opening dates.

It was therefore a no-brainer to make one of the best things about waking up in Matjiesfontein, a great cup of java.

Whatever your caffeine quote of the day, we hope you enjoy our flavourful stocked brews, in partnership with our coffee suppliers, Ciro.

Get your coffee fix
The Lord Milner Hotel serves BOTTOMLESS (yes, you read correctly) Blacksmith coffee brew during breakfast in the dining room, available from our self-service coffee machine.

The Blacksmith Coffee Movement was born out of a simple idea that great coffee can do good things. Blacksmith Coffee Movement is not only about the crafting of beautiful coffee blends from sustainable sources; its real purpose is what comes after that – for this reason we are proud to have partnered with them, stocking both the hotel and the Coffee House.

Coffee in bed?
No problem – all our Historic Hotel Luxury rooms have their very oven coffee pod machines with an excellent range from Lavazza.

The Lavazza story has a deep-rooted history that spans several decades dating back to 1895, with origins in the charming town of Turin through the entrepreneurial skills of founder, Luigi Lavazza.

The authentic coffee is truly something special; a combination of flavours, stories and places, craft and knowledge, as well as a rich culture.

We welcome you to enjoy your next caffeine kick in Matjies!

With love from,
The Matjiesfontein Team

GEAR UP FOR YOUR NEXT MATJIESFONTEIN MOMENT

Winter Special

Surely, the school holiday is excuse enough to take a little road trip with the whole family?! Or perhaps a romantic getaway for two…
Enjoy winter warmers in Matjiesfontein, come cosy up in our little Karoo village this autumn/winter season with our special room rate!

Relax, reconnect and warm up by our fireplace in the dining room or Laird’s Arms. Enjoy fresh morning walks in the veld or a mix of adrenaline and laid-back activities to get you feeling staycation ready.

Inclusive of breakfast (with the added bonus of bottomless coffee during breakfast service) and free entry into the museums. Book either a luxury or classic room in our historic hotel.

From 1 April – 31 August 2021

Luxury room: R 1800 per room
single occupancy: R 1350 per room
Classic room: R 1500 per room
single occupancy: R 1050 per room

Things to do in winter

Fun in the sun doesn’t need only apply to summer. South Africa is blessed with sunshine-filled winter days, leaving no reason to not still enjoy the outdoors during the cooler season. Perhaps the swimming pool is out of question... but hey, we won’t stop you.

1. Get active

Vitamin D is on the menu – a healthy dose for keeping your bones strong and immune system healthy (just don’t forget the sunscreen). An array of adventure-filled activities will keep you exploring the wonders of our little Karoo village and surrounds. The mornings and evenings get very cold, and it’s highly recommend bringing your warm kit (puffer jackets, scarves, beanies, gloves etc.) if you’re venturing out during these times.

Bring along your mountain bikes and hit our 20km mountain biking trail, offering spectacular views of the surrounding Witteberg Mountains.
For the more “rustig” guests, enjoy a veld walk in the early morning – perhaps you’re lucky enough to spot the scarce Leopard Tortoise.

Soak up the sunshine and views with a friendly game of tennis; rackets and balls available at reception or bring your own if you’re feeling a little more competitive.

2. Brush up on history

Located in the famed Lord Milner Hotel dining room, it holds a true sense of history, where even the walls have stories of their own! The food is complimented by the warm ambiance.

Guests staying at the historic hotel have the tasty opportunity to enjoy the cuisine passionately prepared by Executive Head Chef, Craig Paulse, and his team of culinary chefs.

Craig has been with The Lord Milner Hotel, Matjiesfontein for just over a year. The favourite part of his job is being able to cook dishes inspired by the traditional flavours that are indigenous to the Karoo, in this unique destination which has so much history of its own.

Meet Chef Craig

A popular dish is born to the menu from just that; a mouth-watering Karoo Lamb Shank (with a twist from Craig) – don’t just take our word for it.

Lord Milner Hotel Lamb Shank on a bed of mash and a melody of roast vegetables

Craig says, “there is no love more sincere, than the love of FOOD! I love nothing more than low and slow when it comes to cooking and that’s why the lamb shank is a firm favourite, I always believed that good food takes time.”

Another all-time favourite on the menu is the Pork Belly starter, with extra crispy crackling. This dish has been exquisitely prepared and plated with the utmost care – a showcase of art and passion for food at the Lord Milner Hotel. It’s true when they say, 'we eat with our eyes first’.

Slow roasted Pork Belly with a butternut and beetroot puree and crackling

The Coffee House

Whether a day visitor or guest at the hotel, make sure to stop by The Coffee House. A cosy spot to sip quality coffee and a hearty lunch (or an early morning breakfast).

Elana Davel, The Coffee House Chef, is the newest member to join the Matjiesfontein team, and we give her a warm welcome! A few months in and Chef Elana has graced the menu with a new scrumptious item – Venison Pie!

Coffee House Venison Pie with baby potatoes & Greek salad

Elana also assists Chef Craig in the hotel’s kitchen. She adds, “what I like most about Matjies are the beautiful sunsets, the fresh air (unlike that of the city), tranquillity, and of course the food! The Karoo region is a culinary must.”

We invite you to come taste Matjiesfontein with us.

Being situated in the Great Karoo region, Matjiesfontein has one of the clearest skies in the Southern hemisphere, offering a spectacular star gazing experience on the old cricket pitch where the first match between SA and England took place in 1891. Soak up each other’s company in the beautiful silence of the Karoo and allow the day’s thoughts to float away whilst admiring the twinkle of the starry night sky.

Secret gardens
